City Housing Hamilton hosted a ‘Tenant Engagement’ event at Bayfront Park on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014. The club was invited to put on a demo during the event. We took the opportunity to set up an HF station to demonstrate, and handed out club brochures. The event included entertainment, a barbecue lunch, and a variety of other entertainment and vendors. Set-up went easily. I brought my Kenwood TS-590 and support gear, and with Rick (VE3BK) and Scott (VE3QU) helping out, we stuck a half-size G5RV in the air about 25′ above ground. Conditions were great on 20 meters, with a non-existent noise floor and tons of signals from the Kansas QSO party blasting in. Passers-by were stopping to see what all the noise was about. Scott operated for a while in the morning racking up our only contacts. The afternoon brought more foot traffic, making it difficult to concentrate on operating the radio. (That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!) We were able to engage some of the kids with our portables, playing ‘walkie-talkie’ around the park. Perhaps they’ll be back for some Basic training soon. This was a relatively short event, running just 5 hours from 10:30 to 15:30, and knocking down the station went well. We were off the site by 16:00. All-in-all, this was a terrific promotional event, and I hope we can do more of them in the upcoming season. Watch the web site as we fill the calendar.
