Suddenly at home in Meaford on Friday, October 8, 1999, Don Finlayson, in his 81st year,. Beloved husband of the former Bernice Ferguson and devoted father of Janet and Frank Bassingthwaite, of Meaford, Barbara Blackport, of Stony Plain, Alberta and Donna and Tim Durant of Dundas. Predeceased by a son, Donald Frederick Finlayson (1956), a son-in-law, Douglas Blackport and a sister, Laura. Sadly missed by his grandhcildren Don Bassingthwaite, Jeananne (Mrs. Joel Gilchrist), Mark Bassingthwaite, Jamie Blackport, Brian Blackport and his wife Connie, Janine and Michelle Durant and great-granddaughter Tiashya Blackport. Don served in the American Army of Occupation stationed in Italy (1944-1946). He apprenticed as a tool and dye maker and was employed by Westinghouse (Hamilton) for 33 years in the manufacturing engineering department. He was an active member of St. Paul’s United Church in Dundas and in h is retirement years he was a faithful member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Meaford. Don was an avid amateur radio operator (VE3 JUO) who enjoyed entertaining the neighborhood children each Christmas Eve with messages from Santa. The funeral service will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church in Meaford on Tuesday, October 12th at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the service, Grey Chapter #170 Flersherton Order of the Eastern Star will hold a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Followed by a service by Pythagoras Lodge A.F. & A.M. #137 F.R.C. A time of fellowship will be held at the church following the services. Interment of ashes will take place at Grove Cemetery, Dundas. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation.
